Happy (belated) World Curlew Day! Always a little late to these things. Today is Earth Day, as you might have heard. Still, some appreciation for these wonderful waders facing huge challenges is never amiss. Here’s to the Curlews and to all the charities such as Curlew Action doing their most to raise awareness. 🔊🔊🔊

Happy World Frog Day to all our amphibian friends 🐸
➡️➡️ Sound on and 🆙 for slide 5
March 20th is World Frog Day, which was created in 2009 to increase awareness of the plight of threatened frog species around the world. All amphibians, including frogs, are important components of the global ecosystem, as indicators of environmental health and contributors to human health. (Source: amphibianark.org)

I find networking painful. HOWEVER, once you get into the groove you understand everyone is in the same boat, and it becomes quite enjoyable. Note to self: at the next occasion, just say something, whatever. There will be a response. Take it from there 🏄🏼♂️
Lift off! This is the next morning (from last post), when the starlings leave their roosting site. Its equally as epic if not more. First its silent - a timid chorus at this time of year-then the starlings start to chatter. Suddenly there is a build up of rumbling bass, like wind hitting the microphone or something about to erupt. Then the waves across the field, like waves of the ocean, both visually and sonically. And the lift off. The rumble becomes a satisfying silky carpet enveloping you overhead.
This repeats 3-4 times as different waves of departures. MAGICAL

This was spectacular beyond what I could have imagined. The starling murmuration at the Avalon Marshes in Somerset. Hundreds of thousands of birds coming to roost on the reed beds. The numbers are hard to comprehend. We were quite the crowd of humans gathered, but when the starlings started arriving it all fell quiet. There was something supernatural.

The #Underwater sounds of a sea loch in Scotland.
The popcorn popping sounds you hear (especially towards the end of the video) I have been told are made by Pistol shrimp - a cool looking crustacean with a Poppeye-sized arm capable of stunning their pray by blasting them with a shockwave.
I remain however unconvinced as the main thing my eyes can see in the water are seaweeds: Egg wracks and Bladder wracks, the yellow and brown seaweeds with air pockets. It would seem logical that when these air pockets are mature enough they pop under the water’s pressure.
More investigation needed - if anyone has any suggestions i’d love to hear them!

Recording Snipe (aka Gallinago gallinago) for @loughernelelp
You might rightly think the tent is an overkill as Snipe will “drum” (the sound they do when they fly using their tail feathers) at dusk quite obliviously. But in March in Ireland you are better with one if available, as I happily found out on the second evening (➡️swipe to last slide).
Tonight was the yearly @loughernelelp ‘Boa Island Snipe Walk at Dusk’, which takes place very close to this site. In the coming days i will share the otherworldly sounds these rapid birds make, together with some background on why, despite appearances, their numbers are declining. And what to do about it.
Huge thanks go to Michael Stinson (slide 6) of the Lough Erne Wildfowlers Council - if you need a local wildlife expert go no further.
The recordings were done with support from the Lough Erne Landscape Partnership, through funding support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
